Carjacking in Brooklyn leads police to discover 600 pounds of marijuana.
In a striking incident that unfolded in Brooklyn, a carjacking believed to be linked to a brazen illegal marijuana robbery has resulted in multiple arrests and significant law enforcement action. The event, which occurred early Saturday morning, involved a stolen SUV that crashed through a fence and precariously hung over a retaining wall beside a major expressway.
According to police reports, the carjacking was part of an attempted robbery that aimed to seize more than 600 pounds of cannabis. Authorities apprehended three individuals involved in this chaotic episode: two of the carjackers and the victim, identified as 37-year-old Ting Liu. Liu was driving a 2014 Toyota Sienna which contained over 150 pounds of marijuana at the time of the incident.
The events began around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Bay Ridge Parkway and 11th Avenue in Dyker Heights when three men assaulted Liu while he was stopped in his vehicle. The suspects physically confronted Liu, knocking him to the ground, kicking him, and brandishing an object as if it were a firearm. They stole his cellphone, wallet, and keys before forcing him into the back of his own SUV and driving away.
Witnesses to the carjacking promptly alerted the police. Approximately thirty minutes later, the stolen vehicle barreled through a fence at Dyker Place and 84th Street, tumbling down an embankment before coming to a stop teetering on the edge of a retaining wall adjacent to the Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Upon arrival, officers discovered the rear of the vehicle filled with illegal marijuana.
Following the alleged carjacking, the victim, Liu, managed to escape approximately four blocks from the crash site at a residence on 84th Street and 13th Avenue. He was able to contact the police for assistance. In a search conducted by the Sheriff’s Joint Compliance Task Force and the NYPD, approximately 490 pounds of marijuana and three pounds of THC-laced edibles were recovered from the home where Liu sought refuge.
Authorities speculate that the carjackers intended to take Liu to the cannabis stash location but grew nervous and fled, resulting in the high-speed crash when they spotted a police cruiser, even though law enforcement had not pursued them at that point. The carjackers, identified as Christin Barnes, 36, and Marc Rivera, 29, took into custody at the location of the accident, face multiple charges including robbery, burglary, and car theft. They were subsequently ordered to pay bail, although one remains detained.
Liu, who was arrested for possession of illegal cannabis, was released without bail, as the charges against him were non-bailable offenses. The overall investigation regarding the illegal marijuana operation continues, with law enforcement actively seeking any additional suspects involved in this dramatic sequence of events.
