Center City brunch restaurant plans to close due to significant debt and increasing fines.

Last November, restaurateur Shakeira Turner made the decision to close her popular brunch establishment, Chubby Chicks, located in Blackwood, New Jersey, to concentrate on a new, larger venue in Philadelphia’s Washington Square West neighborhood. The relocation aimed to enhance her business presence, but the transition was fraught with challenges.

Chubby Chicks 1111 opened its doors on December 3, 2023, directly across from the Forrest Theater. However, almost immediately after its launch, Turner began experiencing issues with residents of an adjacent condominium complex. Reports of harassment quickly emerged, with Turner alleging that some of the neighbors engaged in racially charged behavior, including unsolicited comments regarding her financial background.

As noise complaints from condominium owners mounted, the condo board began imposing fines of 0 for each reported instance. Efforts to resolve the noise issues fell short, with court documents revealing that discussions between Turner and the condo board yielded little progress.

In February, the situation garnered public attention after digital creator Christina Afia Harris, known online as Dr. Afia, posted a video in support of Turner, describing her experience as one of bullying and racial discrimination. As a result, customers flocked to Chubby Chicks, drawn by its unique culinary offerings, including signature dishes like fried sweet potato pie and weekend DJ brunches. Turner reported an increase in patronage, but the noise complaints persisted.

In recent weeks, Turner faced mounting pressure, with fines from the condo board approaching ,000 and the looming threat of eviction. She publicly announced on social media that she had lost the battle and expected to close the restaurant soon, although she did not disclose a specific timeline. The financial repercussions stemmed from the condo board’s actions against her landlord, who subsequently transferred those fines to Turner.

Compounding her challenges, Turner has encountered additional legal issues with the city regarding her business operations. A notification from the condo board’s attorney indicated that Chubby Chicks was in violation of its lease due to the absence of several essential licenses, including those related to special assembly occupancy and fire safety. Despite a health inspection that indicated compliance with food preparation regulations, the city threatened to shut down the restaurant.

The situation escalated further on June 23, when Turner’s landlord initiated a lawsuit seeking nearly 5,000, covering fines, overdue rent, and legal fees. Meanwhile, Turner continues to manage her difficulties with a previous landlord in New Jersey, who is pursuing over 3,000 in unpaid rent, despite her claims of an informal agreement allowing her departure.

As of this week, Turner expressed gratitude for the support from her customer base while remaining uncertain about her future. In a hopeful statement, she indicated her intention to establish another restaurant, showcasing resilience amid adversity.
