Chicago Tribune awarded Pulitzer Prize for local reporting; Southern California News Group recognized as finalist.

The Chicago Tribune has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting, recognizing its comprehensive coverage of Operation Midway Blitz, a significant immigration enforcement initiative undertaken by the Trump administration in the Chicago area last fall. This prestigious accolade was announced on Monday, and it highlights the Tribune’s commitment to investigative journalism during a pivotal moment in local and national discourse regarding immigration.

Mitch Pugh, executive editor of the Chicago Tribune, expressed pride in the newsroom’s collective efforts, particularly in how staff members collaborated to produce in-depth coverage of the blitz. The Pulitzer Prize, regarded as the highest honor in American journalism, received over 1,000 entries from news organizations across the United States this year.

The Pulitzer judges specifically praised the Tribune for its extensive reporting, which included investigations into various incidents linked to the enforcement operation. These stories encompassed the federal government’s raid on a South Shore apartment complex, the shooting of a U.S. citizen in Brighton Park, and the examination of criminal charges against protesters that were ultimately dismissed in federal court. Altogether, upwards of 75 individuals, including reporters, photographers, editors, and engagement specialists from the Tribune’s newsroom, contributed to this exemplary coverage.

This honor marks the Chicago Tribune’s 29th Pulitzer Prize in its nearly two-century history. Additionally, the judges recognized the publication as a finalist for the prestigious Public Service medal, a recognition the Tribune has received four times since 1980.

In a notable parallel, the Southern California News Group (SCNG), which consists of 11 local news publications, was recognized as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting due to its extensive coverage of the January 2025 Eaton and Palisades wildfires. This recognition is particularly significant as it is the first finalist acknowledgment for SCNG since its establishment in 2016, and it adds to the organization’s total of five Pulitzer awards in its history.

SCNG’s reporting commenced promptly after the initial reports of the fire in the Pacific Palisades, expanding as the wildfire spread throughout the region. The newsroom produced over 40 stories in the first three days, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to covering the crisis even as many staff members faced personal losses. Daniel Tedford, SCNG’s senior editor for crime and public safety, emphasized the importance of capturing the realities faced by affected communities and delivering accurate information during such devastating circumstances.

Both the Chicago Tribune and SCNG fall under the ownership of MediaNews Group, the largest privately held newspaper company in the United States. Frank Pine, executive editor of MediaNews Group, expressed gratitude for the recognition, underscoring the dedication of their journalists to providing accurate and independent coverage that reflects the concerns of the communities they serve.
