Christmas concert announced at Wanamaker Building.

The Wanamaker Grand Court in Philadelphia is poised to welcome back its beloved holiday Light Show this year, alongside a special one-night-only concert, “Home for the Holidays,” set to take place on December 2. This concert promises to showcase a delightful mix of holiday classics and classical compositions, featuring renowned organist Peter Richard Conte, a chorus, orchestra, and solo singers.

Concertgoers can expect to hear iconic holiday pieces such as Sleigh Ride, The Christmas Song, and O Holy Night intermixed with classical works, including the Hanukkah Cantata by composer David Ludwig. This event is part of a broader initiative known as Pipe Up!, a series of performances designated to revitalize the historic space in light of recent changes in management.

The entire concert event will be recorded by WHYY for later broadcast on both radio and television, ensuring the musical celebration can reach an even wider audience during the festive season. In a significant contribution to the arts, philanthropist Frederick R. Haas has donated million to support the ongoing accessibility of the Grand Court and Greek Hall. This funding will enable a range of cultural offerings, including additional concerts and films, prior to the building’s scheduled renovations by its owner, TF Cornerstone, early next year.

Responsibility for the holiday Light Show and the Dickens Village has transitioned from Macy’s to a collaborative partnership involving the Philadelphia Visitor Center and TF Cornerstone. Both of these cherished seasonal attractions are set to open on November 28 this year, although they are anticipated to be paused during the potential construction period in 2026 and 2027.

The December 2 concert will be conducted by Geoffrey McDonald, featuring talents from the Opera Philadelphia Orchestra and Chorus. Noteworthy performances will include soprano Leah Hawkins and Anthony Roth Costanzo, the general director and president of Opera Philadelphia. Additionally, creative design agency 10th Floor Productions will enhance the evening’s experience by projecting visual art onto the Grand Court as the performance unfolds.

As part of its holiday initiatives, the former Macy’s area will also host a Christmas Market beginning on Black Friday, featuring various pop-up food options, including snacks and craft beers. Additional Pipe Up! events are currently in the planning stages and will be announced in the near future.

“Home for the Holidays,” taking place on December 2 at 8 p.m. in the Wanamaker Building at 13th and Market Streets, features tickets starting at , available for purchase starting Thursday at operaphila.org. The concert is scheduled to be broadcast on WHYY TV12 on December 23 at 8 p.m., providing an opportunity for even more audiences to partake in the holiday spirit.
