Chubby Checker to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Chubby Checker, the iconic figure of the American music scene, is finally set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The announcement was made during a recent telecast of American Idol, declaring Checker among the esteemed class of 2025 inductees. Known for his groundbreaking hit “The Twist,” which dominated the Billboard charts in both 1960 and 1962, Checker will be honored in a ceremony in Los Angeles this coming November.

Born Ernest Evans in Spring Gully, South Carolina, Checker rose to fame in the 1960s, particularly noted for his profound influence on dance music and culture. At the age of 83, he will join a remarkable lineup of fellow inductees, including the renowned rock band Bad Company, singer Joe Cocker, pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Atlanta’s OutKast, grunge pioneers Soundgarden, and the blues-influenced White Stripes.

Chubby Checker has been a vocal advocate for his induction into the Rock Hall. As early as 2001, Checker took out a full-page advertisement in Billboard expressing his desire for recognition while he was still alive. His advocacy included a visible protest at the Rock Hall’s 2002 induction ceremony, citing a long-standing exclusion from the accolades he felt he deserved. Remarkably, this marks the first time he has received a nomination.

This year’s induction ceremony will also celebrate the works of Thom Bell, a Philadelphia-based songwriter, producer, and arranger recognized as a key architect of the Sound of Philadelphia during the late 1960s and 1970s—along with his partners Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Bell will receive a Musical Excellence Award, attesting to his significant contributions to the music industry.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO, Greg Harris, acknowledged the joy in Philadelphia regarding the inductions of Checker and Bell, emphasizing their enduring influence on generations of artists and fans alike.

The induction ceremony is set to take place on November 8 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will stream on Disney+. Notably, inductees are determined through a voting process involving 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals, alongside a public voting component. This year, Phish topped the fan votes, with Checker and OutKast ranking lower on the list.

Chubby Checker is credited not only for “The Twist,” his signature track but also for a series of subsequent hits that further highlighted his dynamic presence in the music industry. His legacy is marked by an innovative dance style that had a universal appeal, allowing people to enjoy the music and dance as individuals rather than requiring a partner.
