His death was confirmed by his wife, Jenda Derringer, who stated that he died peacefully at a hospital in Ormond Beach, Florida, after a medical emergency related to his heart. According to reports, Derringer had undergone triple bypass surgery just two months prior to his passing.

Derringer was born Richard Dean Zehringer on August 5, 1947, in Celina, Ohio. He first gained prominence in the 1960s with his band The McCoys. The group achieved a significant milestone when their hit “Hang on Sloopy” soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. This song later became an enduring anthem at sporting events, particularly at Ohio State football games.

Throughout his illustrious career, Rick Derringer collaborated with an impressive roster of musicians, including rock legends Edgar and Johnny Winter. He contributed to timeless tracks such as “Frankenstein,” another chart-topping hit, solidifying his status within the classic rock genre. His versatility as a musician was further demonstrated through collaborations with a range of artists, including Steely Dan, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper, Barbara Streisand, and Cyndi Lauper, with whom he toured frequently.
