Coast Guard rescues 2 people after small plane crashes into Long Island Sound.

Two individuals were rescued following a small plane crash in Long Island Sound on Sunday morning, with both reported to be in stable condition after a dramatic emergency descent. The incident unfolded at approximately 10:24 AM local time when the pilot of the Piper PA-32, identified by its registration number N2242Z, declared an emergency while in communication with New York Air Traffic Control.

According to a statement from Tweed New Haven Airport, the aircraft had taken off from Bridgeport and was en route to an unspecified destination when it approached Tweed, located roughly eight miles away. Air traffic controllers redirected the plane to facilitate an emergency landing; shortly thereafter, the aircraft was reported to have gone down in Long Island Sound off the coast of Branford, with the U.S. Coast Guard indicating that the crash site was located southeast of the Thimble Islands.

Rescue efforts commenced rapidly, with personnel from the New Haven Coast Guard Station deploying a 45-foot vessel to the crash location. The two occupants were successfully retrieved from the water and suffered only minor injuries. Following their rescue, they were transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. While the identities of the occupants have not been disclosed, tracking data from the air traffic monitoring service FlightAware revealed that the registered owner of the aircraft is associated with an address in Newtown, Connecticut.

In a statement, Tweed expressed relief at the successful recovery of the individuals and offered gratitude to the federal, state, and local responders for their swift and coordinated actions during the incident. This event underscores the importance of effective emergency response systems and the bravery of those involved in rescue operations in potentially life-threatening situations.

The community and aviation experts will be monitoring the developments of the FAA investigation closely to better understand the factors that contributed to this unfortunate incident. As further information becomes available, a clearer picture of the events leading up to the crash is anticipated, contributing to ongoing discussions regarding aviation safety in the region.
