Cody Balmer, accused of arson, allegedly intended to assault Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, according to court documents.

Authorities have arrested a 38-year-old man, Cody Balmer, in connection with an alleged arson targeted at the official residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. This incident occurred on the first night of Passover, raising concerns about both the safety of public officials and the increasing prevalence of violence in society.

Balmer has been charged with multiple serious offenses, including attempted homicide, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. Court documents reveal that Balmer expressed intentions to assault Governor Shapiro with a small sledgehammer after traversing approximately one hour from his home to the governor’s residence. Reports indicate that he harbored animosity toward the governor; however, authorities have not disclosed a specific motive for these sentiments. Balmer’s mother has suggested that he has been struggling with mental illness and has been off his medication.

The incident unfolded during the early hours of April 13, 2025, when Balmer allegedly breached a nearly seven-foot-high iron security fence, evading law enforcement officials stationed nearby. Once inside, he reportedly initiated a fire using Molotov cocktails made from gasoline-filled beer bottles in a well-coordinated attack lasting around one minute. Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens characterized the actions as meticulously planned.

At the time of the attack, Governor Shapiro, along with his wife, four children, and two dogs, were asleep in the residence, having recently celebrated Passover with members of the local Jewish community. State police responded swiftly, waking the family and evacuating them around 2 a.m. Fortunately, no one sustained injuries during the incident.

Photographs from the scene depict extensive damage to the governor’s mansion, highlighting charred furniture, broken windows, and a burned piano, suggesting a severe impact on the property. During a press conference, Governor Shapiro condemned the rising tide of violence and called for a unified response to curb such acts, emphasizing that violence directed at any individual or group must not be tolerated.

Balmer’s mother reported that she had reached out to various police departments in an attempt to secure help for her son prior to the incident, indicating a tragic backdrop of mental health issues contributing to the events. In light of the attack, Governor Shapiro reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Pennsylvania and drew a parallel between the story of Passover and his own resolve not to relent in his duties despite facing adversity.

This incident has raised significant questions regarding public safety, mental health intervention, and the alarming trends of violence in political contexts, prompting discussions at both local and national levels.
