Community celebrates World Down Syndrome Day in Encinitas with inclusive BoxxyBall game for all participants.

On March 23, more than 400 attendees gathered at Encinitas Community Park for the annual World Down Syndrome Day celebration, which aimed to foster acceptance and raise awareness for individuals with Down syndrome. The event is part of a larger initiative to encourage families and communities to embrace those living with this condition, creating inclusive environments.

Local organizations played pivotal roles in hosting the celebration. Gigi’s PlayHouse, Down Syndrome Action, and the Down Syndrome Association of San Diego organized a variety of activities designed to engage families and provide essential resources. Attendees enjoyed games, practical support, and opportunities to connect with other families facing similar challenges.

Among the noteworthy participants was BoxxyBall, a local company that introduced a new game designed for inclusive family play. The game, which was conceived in Encinitas in 2023, encourages interaction through a catch-and-throw mechanism utilizing a net, promoting a fun and inclusive atmosphere. Alex McLellan, a resident of Encinitas and the game’s inventor, shared insights about his inspirational journey. He noted that the park where the idea was born has now transformed into a venue for a sport gaining traction along the California coast.

McLellan highlighted his connection with Gigi’s PlayHouse, a center dedicated to offering programs for individuals with Down syndrome, ranging from early childhood classes to adult job training. Collaborating with organizations like Down Syndrome Action and the Down Syndrome Association of San Diego, McLellan emphasized the significant impact these entities have on local families. In a commitment to social responsibility, McLellan has pledged that 10% of BoxxyBall’s profits will be donated to charity, including support for Gigi’s PlayHouse.

Until recently, BoxxyBall was only available for purchase through its official website or on Amazon. However, McLellan announced that the game will now be available at Hansen Surfboards shop in Encinitas, marking a significant step in increasing accessibility for local customers.

World Down Syndrome Day serves not only as a platform for fun and celebration but also as a reminder of the importance of community support and inclusion. For more information about BoxxyBall, interested individuals can visit the company’s official website.
