Composer Joe Hisaishi joins the Philadelphia Orchestra as its latest resident artist.
The Philadelphia Orchestra has appointed renowned composer Joe Hisaishi as its new composer-in-residence, following a successful collaboration earlier this year. Hisaishi, celebrated for his iconic film scores, including music for acclaimed Studio Ghibli films such as “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro,” will hold this position through the end of the 2026-27 season.
Hisaishi, now 74 years old, made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in June. The orchestra’s chief programming officer, Jeremy Rothman, stated that the partnership developed organically from Hisaishi’s initial performances, which demonstrated his considerable appeal and connection with audiences. Rothman noted that Hisaishi’s generous musical spirit and broad accessibility were key factors in establishing this collaborative relationship. The partnership will extend beyond conducting concerts of his own works, as Hisaishi will also curate programs featuring contemporary composers and provide mentorship to composition students.
In a notable departure from the orchestra’s previous live-to-screen presentations, Hisaishi’s concerts will not feature accompanying film clips, allowing the music to take center stage. His artistic style is both varied and rich, showcasing a blend of film score suites and concert hall compositions. Hisaishi has an extensive portfolio, having scored over 100 films, but his most renowned collaborations remain with animator Hayao Miyazaki and the esteemed Studio Ghibli.
Many fans fondly remember Hisaishi’s film compositions for their emotional depth, characterized by sweetness and uplifting qualities that resonate with childhood nostalgia. Rothman described Hisaishi’s unique musical voice as drawing influences from 20th-century minimalist and jazz genres, creating a sound that is both rhythmic and engaging. This accessibility makes Hisaishi’s music appealing to a broad audience, including those with limited familiarity with orchestral music.
Upcoming concerts featuring Hisaishi are scheduled for November and will showcase selections from his scores for “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Castle in the Sky,” alongside his composition titled “DA-MA-SHI-E” and Benjamin Britten’s “Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell.” Rothman emphasized Hisaishi’s lasting significance, predicting that future generations will recognize the importance of the relationship cultivated between the composer and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
The Philadelphia Orchestra’s November concerts with Joe Hisaishi will take place on the 13th and 14th at Marian Anderson Hall, with ticket prices ranging from 0 to 9. For more information, interested patrons can visit the Philadelphia Orchestra’s official website.
