Connecticut man faces 50 animal cruelty charges as authorities seize dogs and cats.

A significant animal cruelty case has emerged in Watertown, Connecticut, where a local man faces 50 charges related to the mistreatment of animals. Authorities acted on a tip concerning the hoarding of a large number of pets at a single residence on Cobb Street. Following the issuance of a search warrant, police discovered a troubling situation involving multiple pets.

Inside the home, law enforcement officials found seven adult dogs, 18 puppies, and 25 cats and kittens, amounting to a total of 50 animals residing in the property. While the police did not provide details regarding the exact number of adult cats present, it was confirmed that the majority of the rescued animals were either kittens or puppies. The situation raised immediate concerns about the living conditions in the residence.

To assess the health and well-being of the animals, professionals from the Roxbury Animal Clinic were summoned to the scene. According to Watertown Police Chief Joshua Bernegger, the recovered animals were found to be “in fairly good health.” However, he emphasized the challenges posed by the sheer number of animals in a confined space, describing the condition of the house as indicative of such an overcrowded environment.

The homeowner, identified as 52-year-old Martin Oliver, has been charged with 50 counts of cruelty to animals due to the circumstances surrounding the large number of pets. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 14. In an interview with local media, Oliver expressed his awareness of the situation, admitting that he had several adult dogs and cats but could not afford to have them all spayed or neutered. He urged pet owners to take proactive measures in ensuring their animals are spayed or neutered to prevent similar incidents of overpopulation from escalating.
