Counselor recognized for substance abuse work dies in moped crash on Bronx bridge months after receiving award.

A respected community figure, Anthony Kohl, 59, an Army veteran and master plumber, tragically lost his life following a collision on City Island Bridge in the Bronx last month. Kohl’s untimely death occurred just a few months after he received the prestigious Peer Specialist of the Year award from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. His recognition highlighted his significant contributions in the field of substance abuse counseling.

Kohl was involved in the recovery efforts at Ground Zero for 92 days following the September 11 attacks, where he utilized his skills as a master plumber to provide crucial assistance during the recovery phase. His family reported that he was riding his moped home from work when, around 3:35 p.m. on September 3, he collided with a 2025 Nissan Murano. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and has not faced any charges, and fortunately, did not sustain any injuries.

Throughout his career, Kohl distinguished himself as a compassionate peer specialist, using his own experiences with addiction to mentor others facing similar challenges.
