Crime Novel Set in 1980s Wildwood Explores Dark Side of Jersey Shore

Joel E. Turner, a Havertown banking systems and data consultant, has ventured into the literary realm with his newly published crime novel, Wildwood Exit. At the age of 70, Turner combines his experience in business with a creative storytelling approach, creating a narrative set against the backdrop of the Wildwood and Cape May area during the 1980s. He characterizes his work as Jersey Shore Noir, reflecting a blend of crime, complexity, and romance that vividly brings this nostalgic era to life.

The novel follows the story of John McGinty, who is called to Wildwood to manage a restaurant owned by his friend Lou Scolletta. What begins as a seemingly simple task spirals into a series of chaotic events filled with eccentric characters. Turner’s writing has been influenced significantly by Pete Dexter, the renowned former columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and the author of celebrated works such as God’s Pocket. In his narrative, Turner captures the essence of characters from Philadelphia’s neighborhoods as they converge on the Shore, providing a rich backdrop for the unfolding drama.

Wildwood Exit opens with a gripping scene where McGinty is on the run following a one-car accident on the Garden State Parkway. The protagonist becomes a reluctant voice of reason as he navigates a world filled with dubious schemes and colorful figures, including a “junkie” from Buena and an assortment of visitors from Quebec. The story delves into the culinary and bar scenes of Jersey Shore restaurants, providing a cultural tapestry that mirrors Turner’s own experiences working at establishments such as Princeton and Gallagher’s Pub in Avalon.

As McGinty gets ensnared in various predicaments, the novel explores deeper themes surrounding escape and the haunting nature of past choices, particularly through the juxtaposition of the Wildwood and Cape May landscapes. With a mixture of humor and tension, Turner’s narrative unfolds rapidly, introducing readers to memorable characters and their attempts to navigate rocky waters.

With plans for a sequel, Turner continues to find inspiration in the Shore, a place that represents both an escape and a confrontation with one’s past. The juxtaposition of serene beach days against the backdrop of chaotic life serves as a metaphor throughout the novel.

Wildwood Exit makes its debut with a launch event at Main Point Books in Wayne, Pennsylvania, scheduled for June 8, 2023, at 2 p.m., shortly after a meeting of Turner’s writer’s group, Liars Club. Another book signing event follows on June 16, 2023, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Wildwood Historical Museum.

This publication not only showcases Turner’s talents as a writer but also invites readers to explore a multifaceted narrative rich with local flavor, cultural nuances, and compelling human experiences. As audiences delve into Wildwood Exit, they may find reflections of themselves amid the vibrant characters navigating life’s complexities, making it a noteworthy addition to contemporary crime fiction.
