Cult member to be arraigned for murder of border agent.

A member of the controversial Zizian group is scheduled to be arraigned on murder charges in Vermont, a case that has garnered significant attention following the announcement by federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty. Teresa Youngblut, 21, from Seattle, faces serious allegations in connection with the fatal shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland during a violent confrontation that occurred on January 20, approximately 20 miles south of the Canadian border on Interstate 91.

Youngblut was initially charged with using a deadly weapon against law enforcement and was accused of discharging a firearm during an assault. However, following an investigation, a grand jury in Vermont issued an indictment charging her with the murder of Agent Maland, an offense that carries the potential for the death penalty. Additionally, she faces charges for the assault of two other border agents and related firearms offenses.

The Justice Department confirmed that Attorney General Pamela Bondi has authorized the Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont to seek capital punishment in this case. The sequence of events that led to the charges reveals that Youngblut and an associate, Felix Bauckholt, were stopped by border agents on the interstate, which triggered the shootout that resulted in the deaths of both Bauckholt and Maland.

Youngblut is one of six individuals linked to the Zizian group—described as a cultlike assembly with a following in Northern California. This organization is reputed for its extreme ideological beliefs and a lifestyle characterized by veganism and rationalism. These individuals currently face a range of criminal charges tied to multiple homicides across Vermont, Pennsylvania, and California.

The group derives its name from Jack LaSota, a transgender woman known for her writings under the alias “Ziz.” The members of this group are implicated in the deaths of at least six people in various states, raising concerns about their violent activities. One notable case involves Michelle Zajko, a member accused of the murder of her parents in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, on New Year’s Eve 2022.

Zajko, LaSota, and another affiliation of the Zizians, Daniel Arthur Blank, were apprehended in Maryland earlier this year. In a handwritten letter denying her charges, Zajko claimed media misrepresentation and defended the group, highlighting the ongoing public and legal scrutiny surrounding the Zizians. As authorities continue to pursue justice in these cases, the complex dynamics of the Zizian group and its connections to violence remain a focal point for law enforcement and community safety.
