Customs officer fires weapon in road rage incident outside JFK Airport following minor car accident.

A significant incident occurred early Tuesday morning outside John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer discharged his weapon during a road rage altercation linked to a minor collision. According to the authorities, the event unfolded at approximately 4:45 a.m. on the Van Wyck Expressway, near the entrance to the airport’s central terminal.

Port Authority police officers responded to the call regarding the crash and arrived to find the on-duty Customs officer involved in the incident. Reports indicate that the officer was initially involved in a fender-bender when the driver of another vehicle became increasingly aggressive. The situation escalated, leading the officer to draw his service weapon and fire at the aggressor.

Witnesses noted that as the altercation intensified, the other driver retreated to his vehicle and attempted to flee the scene. Despite the chaos, the fleeing individual was not struck by gunfire. However, the officer continued to fire his weapon, hitting the driver’s vehicle as it sped away. The other driver managed to elude authorities, and efforts to locate him remain ongoing.

No arrests have been made in connection with this incident. The Port Authority police are conducting a thorough investigation and have been seeking further information from the Customs officer involved. As a result of the shooting and the ensuing probe, authorities temporarily shut down the southbound lanes of the Van Wyck Expressway for several hours, creating substantial traffic disruptions in the area. One lane was reopened to traffic around 7 a.m.

Travelers heading to JFK Airport have been advised to expect delays and are encouraged to follow detour instructions. The Port Authority is actively working to manage the impact of the investigation on airport operations while ensuring public safety during this time. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about road rage incidents escalating into dangerous confrontations, prompting discussions among authorities regarding law enforcement protocols in similar situations.

As this investigation continues, further updates will be provided by the Port Authority and local authorities to keep the public informed.
