Day 6 of New Orleans jail break: Fifth escapee has been apprehended.

Authorities in Louisiana have made significant progress in apprehending individuals who escaped from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility in New Orleans. On Tuesday evening, the Louisiana State Police confirmed the arrest of Corey Boyd, 19, marking him as the fifth of ten escapees to be captured. Boyd was apprehended in the Iberville neighborhood and is set to be transferred to a secure state facility.

The escape occurred in the early hours last Friday and has sparked considerable attention nationwide due to its audacity. The incident has raised alarms among state officials regarding prison security, leading to a concerted manhunt that has involved over 200 officers from local, state, and federal agencies. As of early this week, four other escapees, Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis, and Gary Price, were also captured, leaving five still at large.

Boyd had been incarcerated for serious charges, including second-degree murder and aggravated battery. Following his capture, he faces charges of simple escape, and authorities have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming.

In a related development, Sterling Williams, a jail maintenance worker, has been arrested and charged with aiding the escape. According to the arrest affidavit, Williams reportedly admitted to disabling water supply to a cell, which facilitated the escape through a hole behind a toilet. He has been charged with ten counts of principal to simple escape as well as one count of malfeasance in office. During the investigation, he claimed that he was coerced into compliance by one of the escapees, who threatened him with violence.

Sheriff Susan Hutson, who supervises the facility, addressed the situation during a city council meeting, stating her commitment to accountability and security within the prison system. She acknowledged her responsibility for the escape, which she deemed unacceptable, and announced her decision to suspend her re-election campaign.

The ongoing escape incident has accentuated the vulnerabilities within the correctional system in New Orleans and has prompted discussions among community leaders regarding necessary reforms. As of Wednesday, five individuals—Antonine Massey, Lenton Vanburen, Jermaine Donald, Leo Tate, and Derrick Groves—remain at large, contributing to the ongoing sense of urgency for law enforcement agencies.
