The island began facing significant weather disturbances last week, with conditions deteriorating further on Thursday due to relentless downpours that inundated neighborhoods, agricultural lands, and key transportation routes, which ultimately triggered deadly landslides.
The most devastating impacts were felt in the central mountainous regions of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of the capital, Colombo, where over 25 fatalities occurred as families were caught in landslides. According to reports from the government’s disaster management center, at least 21 individuals remain missing, with 14 more sustaining injuries in those affected areas.
As weather conditions swiftly worsened, the government announced an immediate closure of all public offices and educational institutions in a bid to protect the populace. The rains caused most reservoirs and rivers to overflow, resulting in blocked roadways and necessitating suspensions of passenger train services. Authorities were compelled to close numerous routes as mud, rocks, and fallen trees rendered them impassable, and flooding persisted in various regions.
Rescue efforts are currently underway, with local television capturing an air force helicopter saving three individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by floodwaters. Meanwhile, the navy and police are navigating boats through affected areas to assist residents in need. Tragically, Thursday’s footage also showed a vehicle being swept away by floods near Ampara, resulting in three casualties.
