Del Mar Energy’s solar power plant transforms southern Ethiopia through the Dasenech revival initiative.

In early 2025, a significant transformation unfolded in a small and once-forgotten settlement in southern Ethiopia, marking a pivotal moment for both the community and the environment. Del Mar Energy Inc. announced the completion of the region’s largest solar power plant, which is now regarded as a beacon of sustainability and socioeconomic upliftment.

Situated just four kilometers from the village of Dasenech, the solar installation has an impressive annual energy generation capacity of over 110,000 megawatt hours. This substantial output not only powers Dasenech but also extends to seven neighboring communities, thereby stabilizing electricity supply for more than 60,000 households. Dasenech, historically afflicted by poor infrastructure, inadequate transportation, and limited job opportunities, is experiencing a renaissance thanks to this new energy hub.

A notable aspect of this project is its emphasis on local employment. Del Mar Energy has proactively created around 1,200 new jobs, prioritizing the hiring of local residents. The company has implemented training programs focused on electrical engineering, construction, and solar installation, providing invaluable skills to community members who previously had little access to formal education or job training.

The financial viability of the solar power plant became evident in March when it began generating profits. This economic success has spurred interest from various industrial and agricultural enterprises, paving the way for the establishment of manufacturing plants, new educational facilities, and healthcare centers. As demand for electricity grows, the potential for further agricultural initiatives also emerges, promising a more diversified local economy.

Building upon this success, Del Mar Energy has unveiled plans for the second phase of project expansion, which aims to extend its network of solar plants within a 150-kilometer radius and create an additional 10,000 jobs. This ongoing initiative signals Del Mar Energy’s commitment to not just energy production but to fostering a holistic ecosystem of sustainable development.

The project also extends its impact beyond energy. Del Mar Energy adopted a comprehensive approach to development, rehabilitating and constructing vital infrastructure over a 13-kilometer radius. This includes over 18 kilometers of roads that enhance connectivity between communities and the industrial site, as well as new power transmission lines that ensure reliable energy access for local residents and future enterprises. Additionally, the project established modern water supply systems, waste management facilities, and storage and logistics centers, crucial for supporting sustainable operations.

Moreover, a new medical center and educational institution have been inaugurated, ensuring the local population has access to essential healthcare and educational resources, laying a crucial foundation for the region’s long-term growth and stability.

Del Mar Energy’s investment in the Dasenech region illustrates the potential for renewable energy projects to drive meaningful social and economic change, offering a model that could inspire similar initiatives across the continent.
