Delaware County DA identifies 23-year-old man fatally shot by Aldan Borough police.
The Delaware County District Attorney’s office has publicly identified the individual who was fatally shot by police last week as 23-year-old Ugochukwu Ilodigwe. During a news conference held on Friday, District Attorney Tanner Rouse described the incident as a tragedy but asserted that the actions of the Aldan Borough police officer involved were justified under the circumstances.
On the morning of August 7, police were dispatched in response to a “request for service” 911 call, which, according to Rouse, directs police officers to assist residents with various needs. Body camera footage of the incident was shown during the press conference, providing insights into the chaotic events that unfolded.
Upon arrival, the responding officer was reportedly engaged by Ilodigwe, who was armed with a meat-cutting knife measuring approximately one foot in length. As seen in the footage, Ilodigwe allegedly attacked the officer, knocking her to the ground. Eyewitness accounts indicate that he was heard shouting for her to shoot him, creating a tense and dangerous situation.
The officer, in her response, deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue Ilodigwe, but he fell to the ground only momentarily before he was seen reaching for the knife. Rouse confirmed that Ilodigwe also claimed to possess a firearm during this time. The situation escalated when the officer attempted to regain control and issued several commands for Ilodigwe to put his hands behind his back.
Despite being shocked again with the Taser, Ilodigwe managed to rise to his feet, prompting the officer to use her service weapon, resulting in two shots being fired that ultimately led to his death.
As the community processed the loss, Ilodigwe’s family initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe, raising over ,500 to assist with burial expenses. A post attributed to his sister, Kenechukwu Ilodigwe, described her brother as a bright and generous individual whose untimely death has deeply affected their family. She conveyed that Ugochukwu had a vibrant personality, a love for football, and big dreams and aspirations. The family’s grief was compounded by the abrupt nature of his passing, and Kenechukwu expressed her sorrow over not having the chance to say goodbye.
This incident has sparked discussions regarding police protocol and the handling of mental health crises. It remains an evolving story as the community seeks answers and healing in the aftermath of this tragic event.
