Delaware County woman charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing her daughter to death just days before Christmas.

A woman from Delaware County has been charged with first-degree murder following a tragic incident in which she allegedly fatally stabbed her 23-year-old daughter in their Upper Darby Township home just two days before Christmas. Authorities stated that the incident has left the community in shock.

On the morning of the event, police responded to a 911 call made from the family’s residence on South Bishop Avenue. Upon arrival, they found 57-year-old Diane Grovola covered in blood and suffering from self-inflicted stab wounds. The affidavit detailing the circumstances of her arrest indicates that Grovola was discovered in a distressed state, seated on the living room sofa with a knife in hand.

Inside the home, officers found Grovola’s daughter unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom. The young woman sustained multiple knife wounds to her face, chest, legs, and back. Despite her eyes being open, she was pronounced dead shortly after emergency responders arrived. The affidavit mentioned that Grovola’s husband, returning home after a shift at Philadelphia International Airport, was the first to encounter the horrific scene. He had stopped to buy breakfast for the family before proceeding to the house.

Upon entering, he heard the family’s dog, which had also been injured—a result of knife wounds to its abdomen. Shockingly, Grovola reportedly told her husband that she had stabbed their daughter. As he called 911, she expressed a desire to end her own life, reportedly beginning to stab herself in the chest.

Dangerously, the emergency operator instructed the husband to leave the residence. During this time, Grovola allegedly stripped naked and began damaging property within the kitchen until police arrived. Investigators later recovered a large stainless-steel knife, which appeared to be covered in blood.

In addition to first-degree murder, Grovola faces charges of third-degree murder, possession of an instrument of a crime, and aggravated cruelty to an animal resulting in death. Currently, she remains in custody at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility, where bail has been denied. Grovola is scheduled for an arraignment on January 6 at 9 a.m. This tragic and disturbing case serves as a somber reminder of the complexities surrounding mental health and domestic violence issues in society.
