DermaRite issues nationwide recall of soaps due to potential risk of life-threatening sepsis.
DermaRite Industries, a North Bergen, New Jersey-based manufacturer, has initiated a nationwide recall of several personal hygiene products following potential contamination with Burkholderia cepacia, a bacteria that can cause serious infections. The recall, which affects multiple over-the-counter antiseptic lotion soaps, external analgesics, antimicrobial foam soaps, and antiseptic cleansers, was announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) late last week.
Burkholderia cepacia complex, which is prevalent in soil and water, can pose significant health risks, particularly for individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic lung diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that healthy individuals with minor skin lesions may develop localized infections if exposed to contaminated products. However, for immunocompromised patients, there is an increased risk of the bacteria entering the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis.
Symptoms of B. cepacia infection can vary, ranging from mild to severe respiratory issues, especially in patients with conditions like cystic fibrosis and other chronic lung diseases. In addition to respiratory symptoms, individuals may also experience fever and fatigue.
The products subject to the recall include:
1. DermaKleen: An antiseptic lotion soap with vitamin E intended for handwashing to reduce skin bacteria, with expiration dates between July 2025 and February 2027.
2. DermaSarra: An analgesic cream designed to relieve itching associated with minor skin irritations, with a February 2026 expiration date.
3. KleenFoam: An antimicrobial foam soap containing aloe vera, suitable for handwashing after changing diapers or assisting ill individuals, with expiration dates between August 2025 and January 2027.
4. PeriGiene: An antiseptic cleanser meant for use in the perineal area, with expiration dates between November 2025 and January 2027.
Consumers are urged to cease using these products immediately and to refer to DermaRite’s website for labels and additional information regarding the affected batches. The recall highlights the critical importance of vigilance regarding contamination in over-the-counter health products.
