Development underway for TV series based on ‘A Land Remembered’ with a producer from Tampa.

A television adaptation of the acclaimed Florida novel “A Land Remembered” is currently being developed by a Tampa-based producer committed to filming in the Sunshine State. The work of historical fiction, penned by the late Patrick D. Smith, chronicles the life of the MacIvey family, three generations of dirt-poor Georgians who venture into the unspoiled Florida wilderness in search of a homestead. The novel, published in 1984, follows the family’s struggles against the raw forces of nature, including hurricanes and wildlife, as well as human adversities, including marauding Confederate deserters.

Over the course of a century, from the 1860s to the 1960s, the MacIveys evolve from cattle ranchers to citrus farmers and eventually land developers. The narrative not only showcases the beauty of Florida’s natural landscapes but also explores the complex relationship the family has with the land, which they both nurture and transform.

Todd Wiseman Jr., the producer spearheading the limited series, developed a passion for Smith’s work and identified its potential for adaptation. Wiseman emphasizes the importance of authentically capturing Florida’s unique landscape in the filming process. He has expressed reservations about the ability of larger studios to produce the show in Florida, given the lack of tax incentives that could make filming more financially viable. Wiseman asserts that relocating production to a state like Georgia would detract from the story’s authentic Florida roots.

In partnership with prominent local investors, Wiseman has formed Tobias LLC, which now holds the film and television rights indefinitely. Yet, the state’s withdrawal from competitive funding has resulted in a substantial decline in local productions. If “A Land Remembered” successfully secures state funding, it could signal a renaissance in Florida’s commitment to its film and television community.
