Doctors recognized for saving the lives of a crash victim and her son in Montgomery County.

In a poignant acknowledgment of valor and community service, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele presented Guerin Jones and Brent Fryling with a Civilian Commendation for Exceptional Service, recognizing their heroism in a critical emergency situation. The two men, who were previously strangers, became inadvertently intertwined by fate during a tragic car accident in Whitemarsh Township.

The incident unfolded on May 4, 2024, when Nya Stokes, 24, succumbed to injuries from a horrific collision triggered by her boyfriend, Jabrial Terry, 28, who was reportedly driving under the influence of multiple substances. In the chaos that ensued, Jones, a physician assistant at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Fryling, a visiting doctor from Beverly, Massachusetts, acted swiftly, providing lifesaving aid to Stokes and her unborn child. Their spontaneous decision to intervene showcased an admirable commitment to their professional oaths and a deep sense of civic responsibility.

During the award ceremony, Steele expressed his gratitude and admiration, emphasizing that the efforts of civilians like Jones and Fryling during emergencies exemplify true heroism. The recognition occurred during Steele’s office’s annual event dedicated to honoring law enforcement and community members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication in serving and protecting the public.

In the wake of the tragic accident, Stokes did not survive, however, her newborn son, Saleh, was delivered via emergency C-section and lived for five days in critical care, an interval made possible by the men’s timely actions. Their commitment extended beyond the initial rescue; they provided statements at Terry’s subsequent sentencing, which ultimately saw him plead guilty to homicide by vehicle, resulting in a six-to-12-year prison sentence.

Both Jones and Fryling have sustained their involvement with the case, asserting the importance of assisting the family of victims in seeking closure following such devastating events. Fryling noted that their experience was deeply personal, highlighting the emotional toll of being present during Stokes’ final moments. This case underscores the profound impact of individual actions during emergencies, reminding the community of the strength and resilience that can emerge in the most tragic of circumstances. Through their selfless actions, Jones and Fryling have not only saved a life but also inspired others to engage actively in life-threatening situations where their intervention could make a difference.

Their story serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of community, compassion, and the pivotal role of trained professionals in emergency contexts. More than just a commendation, their act of bravery exemplifies the vital interconnectedness of individuals working towards a common goal: saving lives.
