‘Dreamgirls’ Returns to Broadway Following Worldwide Talent Search
A significant revival of the iconic musical “Dreamgirls” is set to grace Broadway once again, marking its return nearly 40 years after its last appearance. The new production, billed as the first-ever newly directed and choreographed Broadway revival of this celebrated musical, is scheduled to debut in the fall of 2026. The project is being led by renowned director and choreographer Camille A. Brown, who brings a fresh perspective to this classic piece, which draws inspiration from the ascent of Diana Ross and The Supremes during the Motown phenomenon of the 1960s.
Producers Sonia Friedman Productions, along with partners Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and LaChanze, made the announcement on Monday. This revival follows a brief stint in 1987 when “Dreamgirls” last saw the stage. With casting details pending, the production team has revealed plans to conduct auditions for “talented women of all shapes and sizes” across multiple cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris.
Camille A. Brown, a notable figure in the theater community and a Queens native, is well-versed in crafting captivating dance sequences, having recently choreographed the acclaimed revival of “Gypsy” starring Audra McDonald, among other prominent projects. “Dreamgirls,” which originally premiered in 1981, catapulted the careers of talented artists such as Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Loretta Devine, who embodied the central characters known collectively as “The Dreams.” This powerful production, featuring a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and a score by Henry Krieger, garnered 13 Tony Award nominations, ultimately winning six, solidifying its influence in musical theater history.
Despite its esteemed legacy, “Dreamgirls” has had a challenging transition back to Broadway. A 2006 film adaptation featuring an ensemble cast that included Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Anika Noni Rose, and Jennifer Hudson reignited interest in the musical, leading to renewed discussions about its potential return to the stage. In 2009, a reimagined version kicked off a national tour at the Apollo Theater, though it did not fulfill its initial ambition to return to New York City.
Sonia Friedman, celebrated for her work on productions like “Sunset Boulevard,” “Funny Girl,” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” previously produced the Olivier Award-winning British debut of “Dreamgirls” in London in 2016. LaChanze, an accomplished performer and producer who recently earned her fifth Tony Award for the production “Purpose,” began her career in the ensemble cast of the original 1987 revival of “Dreamgirls.” This forthcoming adaptation promises to honor the legacy of the original while inviting new audiences to experience its timeless music and powerful storytelling.
