Driver arrested two years after fatal hit-and-run incident that dragged pedestrian 950 feet in the Bronx, according to the district attorney.

A Bronx woman has been taken into custody nearly two years following a tragic incident in which she was recorded dragging a pedestrian to his death. Police reported the arrest of Timiko Young, 47, who was charged with leaving the scene of the fatal accident involving 59-year-old Jose “Negro” Galan. The incident occurred on October 28, 2023, when Galan was struck near a gas station.

Authorities revealed that Young was refueling her 2013 Lincoln sedan at a Citgo station at Jerome Avenue and Shakespeare Avenue when Galan fell in front of her vehicle around 5:20 p.m. Surveillance footage obtained by law enforcement shows Galan stumbling before collapsing, at which point Young allegedly drove over him as she exited the gas station, dragging his body for approximately 950 feet.

Prosecutors have indicated that Young made no attempt to assist Galan after the incident. She reportedly exited the vehicle to look under it but, upon seeing the victim pinned beneath, chose to return to the driver’s seat instead of helping. Young continued to drive, ultimately stopping in a bike lane, where emergency responders discovered Galan still trapped under her vehicle. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark described Young’s actions as egregious, highlighting a disturbing lack of humanity as she ignored multiple bystanders who attempted to prevent her from leaving the scene.

Upon her arraignment on October 24, 2023, prosecutors emphasized the profound impact of the incident on Galan’s family, noting that they had lost a father, son, and grandfather, a situation that is irreplaceable and tragic. Young, who claimed she had recently purchased the car from an online marketplace and that it was unregistered and uninsured, asserted to first responders that she had not seen any blood. Following the collision, she reportedly drove erratically, believing she was dragging debris.

Galan was transported to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following the incident, Young was at the scene when law enforcement arrived but had not been charged until now. She faces charges of reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of a fatal crash, with a bond set at ,000. A subsequent court date is scheduled for October 29, 2023.

The arrest comes as a somber moment for Galan’s family, who continue to grapple with the lasting effects of the tragedy. Galan’s daughter expressed the depth of her loss on social media, reflecting on the time that has passed since her father was taken from her and the profound void left in her life. An attorney representing Young declined to comment on the case when approached by media outlets. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the consequences for Young’s actions in this heartbreaking episode.
