Driver in fatal crash that killed groom on wedding eve was intoxicated and fleeing from NYPD, according to lawsuit.
In a tragic incident that has drawn significant public attention, the fiancée of a groom-to-be killed just before his wedding is pursuing legal action against several parties. Kirk Walker, 38, was fatally injured in a collision caused by a wrong-way driver on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan on August 24, 2024. The driver, identified as 17-year-old Jimmy Connors, is being sued alongside Nebula, a Times Square nightclub alleged to have served him alcohol, and an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer who attempted to apprehend him after an initial crash.
Court documents reveal that Connors was “visibly intoxicated” when he was served drinks at Nebula, a well-known venue located on West 41st Street. The claim, made by Walker’s fiancée Shauntea Weaver in Manhattan Supreme Court, accuses the nightclub of irresponsibility in serving alcohol to a minor.
Following his service at the nightclub, Connors entered a 2017 Chevy Silverado with Canadian license plates and drove north along the parkway. He collided with the vehicle of an off-duty NYPD officer near Dyckman Street around 2:20 a.m. After this encounter, Connors made a series of reckless driving maneuvers, including speeding the wrong way down a ramp, before crashing head-on into Walker’s Dodge Challenger, which also carried his cousin, Robert “Todd” McLaurin, 40. Tragically, both Walker and McLaurin lost their lives in the accident.
Following the crash, Connors exited his vehicle, reportedly staggering away before fleeing the scene into nearby woods. He resurfaced the next day at the Canadian border with visible injuries, including bruises and cuts. Connors has since been charged with a range of serious offenses including depraved indifference murder and manslaughter.
Weaver’s lawsuit extends beyond Connors to include the NYPD, the Canadian entity that registered the Silverado, and the owners of Nebula, reflecting the gravity of the events surrounding Walker’s untimely death. The complaint highlights the impact of the incident on Weaver and Walker’s family, who were preparing for a wedding just hours before the tragedy.
This case underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding underage drinking, vehicular safety, and police pursuit policies in urban environments. Since this incident, the NYPD has updated its vehicle pursuit guidelines, aiming to reduce the number of unnecessary high-speed chases that can result in injury or fatality. As the legal process unfolds, the families affected by this tragedy seek accountability and justice in light of the devastating loss they have endured.
