Driver’s girlfriend killed by car performing donuts in Brooklyn parking lot.

In a tragic incident that unfolded in Brooklyn, a young woman lost her life when a vehicle, reportedly driven recklessly by her boyfriend, struck her while she was observing the spectacle. Madisyn Ruiz, aged 21, was fatally injured in the parking lot of the Gateway Center around 12:30 a.m. on July 13. Her boyfriend, Zachary Cando, 24, has been charged in connection with the incident.

Authorities confirmed that Cando was maneuvering his 2023 Genesis G80 in circles, commonly referred to as “doing donuts,” when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with Ruiz, who was sitting beside a curb near the Dave & Buster’s arcade. Emergency medical services transported her to Brookdale Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Cando remained at the scene and was swiftly arrested. He faces charges of criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving due to the dangerous nature of his actions at the parking lot that night. Although tire tracks from the incident were still visible days later, family and friends have expressed their disbelief over the turn of events, emphasizing that it was a tragic accident rather than an intentional act.

Relatives of both Ruiz and Cando have shared their devastation in the wake of the accident. One grieving family member described Cando’s love for Ruiz as deep and unwavering, stressing that their relationship was built on mutual care and support. Friends of Ruiz painted a picture of a compassionate and selfless individual who had just graduated from LaGuardia Community College with aspirations of pursuing a career in the medical field. They shared fond memories, recalling her warm interactions and joyous spirit, which brought comfort to those around her.

A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support her family and to commemorate her life. Family and friends have highlighted the profound impact Ruiz had on others, describing her as a bright light whose loss is deeply felt.

The incident has left the community grappling with grief and reflection on the dangers of reckless driving. As Cando was released on a ,000 bond following his arraignment, the broader discussions surrounding accountability and safety on the roads are likely to continue as the investigation progresses.
