Drone strike targets UN aid convoy in Darfur, Sudan, exacerbating the ongoing famine crisis in the region.

A recent drone attack has targeted a convoy of 16 trucks filled with vital food supplies intended for the famine-stricken North Darfur region of Sudan, marking a significant escalation in the humanitarian crisis arising from ongoing conflicts within the country. The United Nations confirmed the incident and reported that all drivers and personnel associated with the World Food Programme (WFP) convoy remained unharmed.
According to statements from the WFP, the attack led to the destruction of at least three trucks, although conflicting reports emerged regarding the total number of trucks affected. UN spokesperson Daniela Gross provided updates, emphasizing the safety of the convoy’s occupants, a crucial aspect amidst the chaos.
The situation remains fluid, as various factions have exchanged accusations regarding responsibility for the attack, further complicating the context of an already dire humanitarian situation. The paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has blamed the Sudanese army for the assault, alleging that it was part of a broader military operation targeting local markets. Conversely, the army has described these allegations as a diversion from the RSF’s own actions.
This incident represents the second assault on a UN convoy in a three-month period, with the previous attack occurring in early June near the besieged city of El-Fasher, resulting in fatalities and injuries. Reports from Edem Wosornu of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicate that approximately 70 trucks filled with essential supplies are currently stalled in RSF-controlled Nyala, unable to proceed without guarantees of safety.
The alarming humanitarian situation in Sudan has drawn the attention of various nations, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, each calling for cessation of hostilities to facilitate humanitarian access. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 due to longstanding tensions between the military and RSF, has already led to the tragic loss of around 40,000 lives and displaced nearly 13 million people, with approximately 25 million currently facing acute hunger.
In the context of the humanitarian crisis, WFP representative Gift Watanasathorn urged all parties involved to adhere to international humanitarian law, underscoring that humanitarian personnel and their resources must not be targeted.
As the conflict continues to evolve, the resilience of local communities and their support systems becomes increasingly crucial. The international community must remain vigilant and proactive in their response to this worsening situation, ensuring that aid reaches those in dire need.
