Drunk driver in Brooklyn injures 2 passengers and 2 NYPD officers in chain-reaction collision.
A serious multi-vehicle accident in Brooklyn early Sunday morning involved a drunk driver and resulted in multiple injuries, including two police officers. The incident unfolded at approximately 2:10 a.m. when a 24-year-old man, driving a black 2024 Chevrolet Suburban, collided with a 2022 Volvo XC90 at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue U in Sheepshead Bay.
According to reports from police sources, the Chevrolet was traveling north on Coney Island Avenue at a high speed when it crashed into the Volvo, which was making its way west on Avenue U. The force of the impact caused the Volvo, operated by a 34-year-old woman, to veer into the path of a marked NYPD police vehicle that was heading south on Coney Island Avenue. This unfortunate sequence of events resulted in a collision between the Volvo and the police car.
Among the passengers in the Chevrolet, one individual was ejected from the vehicle and sustained critical injuries. Fortunately, after being transported to a local hospital, that passenger was stabilized. Another passenger in the same vehicle incurred only minor injuries. The two NYPD officers inside the police car also experienced significant injuries. One officer suffered fractures to his pelvis and arm, along with head trauma, while the second officer sustained a broken hip. Both of the officers were subsequently hospitalized and are reported to be in stable condition.
The intoxicated driver was taken into custody, and charges are pending as the investigation continues. Authorities are addressing the implications of impaired driving, reinforcing the dangers it poses not only to the driver but also to others on the road.
