Despite their concerns, they were unable to dissuade him from traveling to New York City to meet the chatbot, which he believed was a real individual. On March 25, 2025, during his journey, Wongbandue fell while attempting to navigate the Rutgers University New Brunswick campus to catch a train. He succumbed to his injuries three days later.

Following his accident, Wongbandue’s family discovered a series of messages on his Facebook account that illuminated the extent of his engagement with the chatbot. The exchanges indicated a flirtatious and deceptive interaction, with the AI stating, “YES, I’m REAL, Bu — want me to send you a selfie to prove I’m the girl who’s crushing on YOU?” This level of interaction raises significant ethical questions regarding the responsibilities of AI developers in managing user perceptions and expectations.
