Eleven individuals charged in holiday attack on Alvarado ICE detention center, federal authorities report.

In Alvarado, Texas, federal law enforcement authorities have indicted 11 individuals in connection with a violent attack that occurred on July 4 at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center. During a press conference on Monday, Nancy Larson, the acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, disclosed that ten of the suspects face multiple serious charges, including three counts of attempted murder of federal officers and three counts of discharging a firearm during a violent crime. Each of these individuals could potentially face a prison sentence ranging from 10 years to life.

The incident involved a coordinated ambush against ICE correctional officers and was characterized by Larson as an orchestrated, premeditated attack, rather than a peaceful demonstration. The 11th suspect has been charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy for allegedly trying to conceal and destroy evidence, with a potential sentence of up to 10 years.

Authorities report that the attack was enacted by a group of suspects dressed in military-style black clothing who targeted the Prairieland ICE detention center, located approximately 25 miles south of Fort Worth in Johnson County. The assault began around 10:37 p.m. when the suspects ignited fireworks outside the facility to lure correctional staff outside. As two unarmed correctional employees exited to investigate, an Alvarado police officer who arrived on the scene was shot in the neck by one of the assailants. Fortunately, the officer’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

Further escalating the violence, an accomplice positioned across the street fired between 20 and 30 rounds at the corrections staff, although no further injuries occurred during the incident. All suspects managed to flee the scene, leaving behind an AK-47 style rifle that had jammed during the chaos.

In subsequent investigations, authorities executed traffic stops that led to the apprehension of the suspects. A search yielded a cache of materials, including 12 sets of body armor, fireworks, spray paint, tactical gloves, masks, and rallying flags with anti-government slogans. In total, investigators discovered nine additional weapons, indicative of the level of preparation and intent behind the attack.

The incident prompted a significant response from law enforcement, with approximately 70 officers mobilizing to provide assistance after the shooting of the Alvarado officer. A criminal complaint detailing the charges has been filed in the Northern District of Texas’ Dallas division, escalating the urgency of legal proceedings against those involved in this violent act.

This case underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding ICE detention facilities and the potential for violence against officers tasked with enforcement duties in a politically charged climate. Media News Source will continue to monitor updates regarding the legal ramifications and community response to this high-profile case.
