Equipment failure at Delco refinery leads to strong odor, officials report.

Residents of Delaware County and Northern Delaware experienced a strong and unexpected odor on Thursday morning, which some initially attributed to the recent trash strike in Philadelphia. However, authorities have clarified that the source of the unusual smell was linked to a brief equipment failure at the Monroe Energy refinery in Trainer.

At approximately 6 a.m., a power outage affected operations at the refinery, resulting in the emergency shutdown of several units. This incident prompted the facility’s flare stack to release visible smoke and flames, referred to by the Woodlyn Volunteer Fire Company as a “burn-off.” Subsequently, the smell, likened to sulfur or gasoline, permeated the surrounding areas.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control reported that power was successfully restored by about 7:40 a.m., following which the flare ceased emitting smoke. Although Monroe Energy did not provide immediate commentary on the incident, the situation led to numerous calls to emergency services in the locale. The Talleyville Fire Company reported receiving approximately 20 calls within a half-hour regarding the odor, which raised concerns among residents.

Despite the alarming nature of the smell, the Wilmington Fire Department reassured the public that it posed no significant health risk. However, safety officials advised residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions, to take precautions. Recommendations included turning off air conditioning systems, closing windows and doors, and remaining indoors until the odor cleared.

Local fire departments promptly responded to the situation to investigate the source of the smell, reassuring residents that there was no need for panic. Furthermore, officials encouraged anyone concerned about the odor, whether indoors or outdoors, to contact emergency services for assistance.

Residents were reminded of the importance of quick communication in cases of potential environmental hazards. This incident highlights the critical nature of operational transparency and effective emergency response measures in safeguarding community health and safety.
