Father Judge wins second consecutive Catholic League title with victory over Neumann Goretti.
The Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) title remains firmly in the hands of the Father Judge High School men’s basketball team, marking a significant milestone in the school’s athletics history. After a 27-year absence from the championship win column, the sixth-seeded Crusaders triumphed over the fourth-seeded Neumann Goretti with a narrow 55-52 victory at the iconic Palestra venue.
The match showcased a tense atmosphere, particularly in the closing moments, as Neumann Goretti’s Deshawn Yates cut Father Judge’s lead to a mere point with a three-pointer 18.8 seconds from the final buzzer. Nevertheless, the Crusaders proved resilient, converting critical free throws in the final seconds to secure their victory.
Father Judge’s offense was anchored by senior Derrick Morton-Rivera, who contributed 14 points, while fellow senior Nick Evans added 12 points to the scoreboard. Neumann Goretti’s Marquis Newson distinguished himself with a game-high 19 points, demonstrating his significant role in the Saints’ efforts.
This championship came as a surprise to many observers, considering Father Judge’s earlier struggles this season, including a 4-8 record and a previous loss to Neumann Goretti on February 1, when they were defeated 71-66. However, the Crusaders managed to turn their season around dramatically, culminating in their second consecutive PCL title.
Father Judge’s success can be attributed not only to their skill on the court but also to a strong sense of community and supportive coaching. Coach Chris Roantree, in his fifth year with the program, emphasized the importance of player investment in building a competitive culture that fosters excellence. He noted that the team’s journey involved dedication from players and coaches alike, all committed to the goal of achieving success.
The Crusaders established an early lead by executing a 19-5 scoring run that spanned the first and second quarters, ending the first half with a score of 25-16. Key to their performance, senior Max Moshinski, who is slated to play at Iona, dominated the boards, providing a solid defensive presence.
As the fourth quarter unfolded, Neumann Goretti fought to close the gap, pressing closely within three to five points. However, Father Judge’s potent defense compelled the Saints into challenging decisions, ultimately sealing their fate with successful free throws.
Looking ahead, Father Judge is set to prepare for the PIAA Class 6A state tournament, scheduled to commence on March 7. Roantree expressed pride in his players’ dedication, highlighting the lengths to which they go to be part of what he describes as a “special” team. The Crusaders are eager to build on their recent triumph, showcasing their tenacity as they compete in the upcoming state series.
This victory for Father Judge not only solidifies their position within Philadelphia’s competitive high school basketball scene but also serves as an inspiring narrative of resilience and teamwork.
