Father of Bronx mugger arrested for using victim’s credit card after beating NYPD officer.
The father of a suspect involved in a violent mugging of an off-duty NYPD officer in the Bronx has been apprehended for allegedly using the victim’s stolen credit card, according to police reports released on Tuesday. Jeffrey Hargrove, 55, faces charges of petty larceny and criminal possession of stolen property as authorities continue their search for his 23-year-old son, Taveon Hargrove, who has been identified as one of the assailants in the incident.
The violent attack occurred around 4:15 a.m. on Saturday in Westchester Square, as the 27-year-old officer was returning home from his shift. Police disclosed that during the confrontation, one of the assailants forcibly took the officer’s firearm, resulting in severe injuries including a broken orbital bone. Disturbing footage of the incident shows the offenders ruthlessly assaulting the officer, as they repeatedly struck him and even stomped on his head while he lay incapacitated on the ground.
Jeffrey Hargrove was taken into custody early Sunday after a credit card belonging to the victim was allegedly used at a local establishment. Following the father’s arrest, police issued a wanted poster for Taveon Hargrove, labeling him as “extremely dangerous” and seeking public assistance for information leading to his capture. The NYPD has intensified efforts to locate him, with Commissioner Jessica Tisch stating that significant resources are being dedicated to apprehending Taveon.
The disturbing nature of the crime has drawn considerable public attention and raised concerns about safety in the area. The police are still investigating the incident and have not yet identified the second suspect involved in the assault, further underscoring the ongoing threat posed to the community.
Jeffrey Hargrove was released without bail after his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court on Sunday. Law enforcement continues to urge anyone with information related to the case to reach out to Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, ensuring all tips will be kept confidential.
As the NYPD works to restore public confidence in the safety of the streets, community leaders and residents are increasingly vocal about the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The collaboration between law enforcement and the community is essential in combating rising street crime and ensuring the safety of individuals, particularly those serving as public safety officers.
