FDA warns of potentially radioactive shrimp sold at Walmart.

Recent warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have raised concerns regarding potentially radioactive frozen shrimp available at Walmart. The FDA has identified three specific lots of the Great Value brand frozen shrimp that may have been contaminated with cesium-137, a radioactive isotope commonly associated with nuclear fission.

In a public advisory, the FDA urged consumers who may have purchased the tainted shrimp to dispose of the product immediately, emphasizing that it should not be consumed or served. Retailers and distributors were also instructed to remove the affected items from their shelves to ensure public safety.

The contamination was initially discovered by Border Patrol officials who detected cesium-137 in containers arriving at ports in major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah. These containers were linked to BMS Foods, an Indonesian firm, which has since been banned from exporting products to the United States while an investigation is conducted.

Although the FDA confirmed that the containers from BMS Foods and a sample of breaded shrimp tested positive for cesium-137, it was noted that no food products sold to consumers, including the Great Value shrimp, tested positive for radiation. Nevertheless, the FDA’s warning was issued due to concerns over the unsanitary conditions under which the shrimp products appeared to have been prepared, packed, or handled.

The FDA is continuing its investigation into not only the shrimp but also other products imported by BMS Foods, with assurances that no products linked to the company will be allowed into U.S. commerce until the identified conditions are fully resolved. This precautionary measure aims to reassure consumers about the safety of food supplies.
