FDNY firefighter dies in motorcycle accident on Manhattan’s FDR Drive; driver fled the scene.
A distinguished firefighter of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), Matthew Goicochea, tragically lost his life in an incident involving his motorcycle on the FDR Drive early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. near East 9th Street, when Goicochea, who was riding a 2023 Yamaha motorcycle, reportedly lost control and fell. Following this, he was struck by a vehicle, the driver of which did not stop at the scene. Law enforcement officials have stated that they are currently investigating whether the driver was aware of the incident and have not yet been able to provide a description of the vehicle involved.
Emergency medical personnel quickly transported Goicochea to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding the crash have sparked an ongoing investigation by police.

In August 2023, Goicochea and his team were the first responders to a fierce fire in a six-story building in Morris Park, where he successfully rescued a victim trapped in a wheelchair amidst the chaos and flames.
Having joined the FDNY in September 2022, Goicochea served with Ladder Company 41 in the Bronx. His dedication to protecting the lives of New Yorkers was evident during his tenure with the department. During the aforementioned incident, Goicochea demonstrated exceptional bravery, navigating through smoke-filled hallways to locate and rescue the unconscious victim. His decisive actions, characterized by remarkable selflessness, not only saved a life but also showcased the true spirit of New York’s bravest.
