Fifty abused Belgian Malinois dogs rescued from unsanitary conditions in Queens apartment.
In a shocking case of animal cruelty, authorities discovered over 40 Belgian Malinois dogs confined in a cramped, unsanitary apartment in the Woodside neighborhood of Queens, New York City. The incident, which has sparked a comprehensive animal cruelty investigation, highlights the severe issues of animal neglect and the need for greater awareness of pet ownership responsibilities.
This distressing discovery occurred in the early hours of Thursday, when rescuers from the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), in collaboration with the ASPCA, responded to community tips directing them to an apartment located on 62nd Road near Yellowstone Boulevard. Upon entering the residence, officials reported finding numerous dogs packed into the space, with some seeking refuge in closets and kitchen cabinets. The living conditions were described as deplorable, leading to immediate concerns about the welfare of the animals.
Tara Mercado, the Director of Behavior and Shelter Operations at ACC, noted the harrowing reality that these dogs likely spent their entire lives in confinement, never experiencing the outside world. Many of the Belgian Malinois, a breed known for its intelligence and energy, were found in a state of distress. Photographic evidence revealed dogs climbing over one another in the cramped hallway of the apartment.
Initial assessments have begun for the rescued animals, who are now being housed at the Queens ACC facility. The dogs are reportedly undergoing a process of “decompressing,” with essential care and walks being provided for the first time. Given that they lived in such close quarters, the sudden transition to individual attention has proven overwhelming for many.
While an initial health check indicated that the dogs did not appear to be malnourished, officials are taking caution as they assess their behavioral and social needs. The owner of the dogs was not present during the rescue, prompting an investigation by the NYPD Animal Cruelty Squad.
Due to the sheer number of dogs involved, the ACC has reported a significant strain on their resources, as the influx of these animals has nearly tripled the shelter’s capacity. Currently, the organization is tasked with ensuring that these Belgian Malinois receive the necessary behavioral support and medical care before they can be considered for adoption.
The Belgian Malinois is a breed that requires significant mental and physical stimulation, making proper care essential for their well-being. Moving forward, ACC plans to coordinate with breed-specific rescues focused on the Belgian Malinois to ensure that these dogs are placed in appropriate homes following their rehabilitation.
Anyone interested in adopting from the ACC is encouraged to visit the agency’s website to learn more about available pets and the adoption process. This case underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and the collective responsibility to protect the welfare of animals in our communities.
