Fire in Upper West Side damages trash cans and vehicles in early morning spree.
A series of arson incidents unfolded in Manhattan’s Upper West Side early on Friday morning, with a suspect reportedly igniting multiple fires. According to officials, the first event occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the vicinity of the American Museum of Natural History, located on West 77th Street near Columbus Avenue. Witnesses described a male, identified as a white individual, dressed in a hooded long coat, blue jeans, and carrying a blue backpack, who was seen setting fire to a garbage can.
This initial fire quickly spread, resulting in damage to two parked cars in close proximity. As firefighters responded to the scene, the suspect reemerged approximately 40 minutes later and moved five blocks away to West 82nd Street, where he set another garbage can ablaze, further damaging property in the area.
Fortunately, authorities reported no injuries stemming from either of the arson incidents. The suspect fled the scene on foot, and, as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with these events. The New York Police Department is actively investigating the cases and appeals to the public for any information that may assist in identifying and apprehending the suspect.
In a separate incident occurring just blocks away, authorities also reported a mugging at the 86th Street subway stop for B and C trains at Central Park West the preceding Wednesday. During that event, a 57-year-old woman was threatened at gunpoint by an assailant who robbed her of her bag, which contained personal belongings including an iPhone and credit cards.
The recent incidents have raised concerns about public safety in the area, and residents are encouraged to remain vigilant.
