Folk Fest returns featuring must-see performances and artists.
The Philadelphia Folk Festival, now in its 62nd year, is set to return to Old Pool Farm in Salford, near Schwenksville, welcoming a diverse lineup of artists, including multiple performers named John. This annual gathering, affectionately referred to as “Fest” by long-time attendees, promises an exciting experience for music lovers over the course of its three-day span from Friday through Sunday.
The festivities begin with a special concert exclusively for campers on Thursday, featuring notable acts such as Hezekiah Jones, Chris Kasper, and Mason Porter. After a challenging year in 2023, when the festival was canceled due to financial difficulties, this weekend’s event features more than 70 performances from a variety of talented musicians.
The Main Stage will be hosted by John Flynn, a well-known Philadelphia songwriter making his 15th appearance at the festival. Flynn will take the stage twice on Saturday and again on Sunday evening, stepping into the significant role previously held by Gene Shay, a beloved figure in the festival’s history who served as host for nearly 60 years until his passing in 2020.
The lineup of performers named John is impressive and reflective of the rich musical heritage represented at the festival. Featuring John Gorka, known for his introspective lyrics; John Moreland, a celebrated songwriter from Oklahoma; and John Forster, a cabaret artist, the festival showcases a variety of styles. Also included is the John Byrne Band, highlighting traditional Irish music, and acoustic blues duo Brother John, comprising Johnny Never and John Colgan-Davis.
Among the recommended acts not to miss during the festival are the hip-hop harp duo Kuf Knotz & Christine Elise, bluegrass pioneers the Gibson Brothers, and Celtic fiddler Eileen Ivers. The American Patchwork Quartet will also perform, combining Appalachian folk sounds with elements of Indian classical music and gospel.
