Ford recalls over 850,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to risk of fuel pump failure.

Ford Motor Company has announced a significant recall affecting over 850,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential defect in the low-pressure fuel pump. The issue presents a serious safety concern, as it could lead to engine stalling while the vehicle is in operation, consequently increasing the risk of accidents.

The recall encompasses a broad spectrum of vehicles that bear the Ford and Lincoln branding, including popular models such as the Ford Bronco, Explorer, and F-150, along with the Lincoln Aviator and Navigator. Documentation released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlights the specific models affected, spanning various production years from 2021 to 2023.

Starting on July 14, Ford plans to initiate the notification process, sending letters to inform owners regarding the associated safety risks linked to the faulty fuel pump mechanisms. However, the company is still in the development phase for a solution to rectify the issue. According to the NHTSA’s recall report, once a remedy is established, owners will receive follow-up communication with detailed instructions for servicing their vehicles at authorized dealerships at no cost.

At present, Ford has not disclosed a timeline for when a solution will be available to address the problem. The company has reached out to the public for vigilance, urging vehicle owners to be aware of any early warning signs. Potential indicators of fuel pump failure may include diminished engine performance, persistent check engine lights, or a noticeable decrease in power.

The recall report specifies that fuel pump failures are more likely to occur in warm weather conditions or when fuel levels are low. Internal contamination of the car’s jet pump may also contribute to loss of fuel pressure and flow. During the manufacturing process review, Ford identified supplier-related changes that could have affected the fuel pump’s reliability.

Ford estimates that approximately 10% of the vehicles subject to this recall possess the identified fuel pump risk, including certain 2021-2023 models of the Ford Bronco, Explorer, and Lincoln Aviator, along with select F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty trucks, as well as various 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigators, Ford Mustangs, F-150s, and certain 2022 Expeditions.

While there have been no reported accidents or injuries tied to this recall as of now, the automaker emphasizes the importance of addressing any signs of potential fuel pump failure and urges owners to stay informed.

For more information on the recall and potential safety concerns, affected vehicle owners are encouraged to monitor communications from Ford and the NHTSA for updates.
