Former Long Island probation officer admits to having sex with a woman under his supervision.
A former probation officer in Nassau County has entered a guilty plea in connection with a sexual relationship he had with a woman under his supervision, as well as for falsifying related official records. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office reported the developments on Monday, revealing that Matthew Albertson, 43, of Smithtown, was engaged in the inappropriate relationship for approximately four months starting in late 2021.
The situation came to light in August 2023 when the woman’s attorney alerted local authorities about the nature of their relationship. The report included screenshots of text messages and other documentation indicating that the illicit relationship extended from November 2021 to at least March 2022.
Subsequent investigations conducted by the District Attorney’s Office uncovered serious violations of procedure. Albertson was found to have falsified probation records on at least nine occasions between January 2022 and August 2023. These records inaccurately recorded the woman’s drug testing, as well as her attendance during office and home visits, which did not occur despite documented claims to the contrary. For instance, his reports included fabricated entries asserting that drug tests were conducted at the probation office and that check-ins, both via phone and in-person, had taken place on specific dates.
Further probing revealed that Albertson’s engagement with the woman included sexual encounters during home visits, which clearly violated established rules prohibiting intimate relationships between probation officers and their supervisees. In addition to inappropriate conduct, Albertson reportedly provided the woman with approximately ,000 over at least 18 occasions. This money assisted her with various expenses, such as car rentals and personal care, and he notably failed to notify authorities after she communicated about a fentanyl overdose.
Upon pleading guilty to charges of offering a false instrument for filing and official misconduct, Albertson faces significant consequences. Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly condemned his actions, describing them as an egregious abuse of power that undermines the integrity of the probation system. Albertson is set to be sentenced on November 14, where he could face up to six months of incarceration alongside five years of probation.
This case highlights the importance of maintaining ethical standards within the probation system to ensure the safety and accountability of those under supervision. Media News Source.
