Four individuals injured in shooting at graduation party in North Philadelphia, including a mother and her two children.

In a tragic incident on Thursday night, four individuals, including a mother and her two children, were critically injured when a gunman unleashed a barrage of gunfire at a graduation party in North Philadelphia. According to police reports, the shooting occurred around 9:40 p.m. on the 2300 block of North Lambert Street, where families had assembled to mark the completion of a summer school program for local youth.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that children were engaged in recreational activities, such as playing football, when a masked assailant, armed with a 9mm handgun, began firing indiscriminately into the gathering. A 36-year-old mother sustained gunshot wounds to her back and buttocks, while her 12-year-old daughter suffered multiple injuries from gunfire that struck her in the abdomen and legs. In addition, the woman’s 11-year-old son was reportedly shot in the stomach. A 45-year-old male bystander was also caught in the crossfire, suffering two gunshot wounds to his arm.

Emergency responders quickly transported all four victims to Temple University Hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition as of Friday. The police are investigating the circumstances leading to this senseless violence, with Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore indicating that the shooting may have stemmed from a verbal altercation between local parents and the driver of a black SUV, who had nearly struck children playing in the street.

The situation escalated after the confrontation, as witnesses reported that shortly after the SUV drove away, a man dressed in dark clothing approached and opened fire. Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage to determine the gunman’s movements before and after the incident, as well as following leads regarding the SUV involved.

The following morning, the once festive street bore little resemblance to the celebratory scene from the previous night. Decorations such as balloons and streamers were being removed as hazmat teams conducted clean-up from the violence. Residents expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, reflecting on the pervasive issue of gun violence that continues to affect neighborhoods.

This incident is particularly alarming given recent statistics indicating a disturbing trend in gun violence affecting the youth in Philadelphia. In the past year, children under 18 made up 13% of gun violence victims—a sharp rise from 6% in 2015. As of mid-July 2025, at least 71 children have been shot, with nine succumbing to their injuries. This escalation of violence, particularly towards the youngest members of the community, highlights an urgent need for effective measures to protect children and address the underlying issues contributing to such tragedies.
