Freezing temperatures in NYC expected to continue into next week with no immediate relief.

As the weekend approaches, New Yorkers are faced with an unusually severe cold snap that shows no signs of abating. Overnight temperatures dropped to near single digits, causing significant discomfort for commuters on Friday morning, with wind chills reportedly making it feel as harsh as 5 degrees below Fahrenheit, per information from the National Weather Service.

While the day may bring sunny skies, meteorologists anticipate that daytime highs will struggle to reach only around 15 degrees. As night falls, temperatures are expected to plunge once again into the single digits, with wind chills potentially driving readings down to 20 degrees below zero overnight.

The weekend forecast holds little promise for relief. Although a storm that threatened to hit the city appears to be shifting away, it still carries the potential for light snow showers across parts of Long Island and coastal New Jersey. However, any accumulation and impact are expected to be minimal. The National Weather Service has reported that the “potential for snow” on Sunday is diminishing, though cold weather advisories have been extended through Saturday morning.

Looking ahead, AccuWeather forecasts indicate that the next significant warm-up, with highs expected to surpass the freezing mark of 32 degrees, won’t materialize until Thursday. Even then, temperatures are projected to barely exceed freezing before dipping back below that threshold in the evening. If the current trajectory holds, New Yorkers will face a staggering 12 continuous days of high temperatures at or below 32 degrees, approaching the city’s record of 16 consecutive freezing days.

The recent substantial cold has been compounded by an earlier winter storm that left nearly a foot of snow in Central Park, creating ongoing challenges for the city. With freezing temperatures persisting, the snow has remained largely intact, thus straining city resources.

New York City officials have mobilized crews to address these weather-related challenges, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasizing the city’s commitment to clearing critical infrastructure, including bus stops and sidewalks. Reports indicate that the city has deployed snow-melting sites to remove approximately 23 million pounds of snow. In light of the extreme conditions, the mayor urged residents to keep an eye out for those in need, noting that such frigid conditions can be life-threatening.

In a tragic reflection of the current weather crisis, recent reports indicate that ten individuals have succumbed to the intense cold in New York City from Saturday to Tuesday, underscoring the pressing need for vigilance and support during this unforgiving weather event.
