French town sets world record for the largest assembly of Smurfs.

In a remarkable display of community spirit and creativity, the town of Landerneau in western France has set a new world record for the largest gathering of individuals dressed as Smurfs, with over 3,000 participants counted during the recent weekend festivities. This charming event, which drew attendees from across the region, reflects a strong sense of camaraderie and fun among locals and visitors alike.
Nestled in Brittany, Landerneau, a quaint town of about 16,000 residents, had previously made two attempts to reclaim the record from Lauchringen, Germany, which had successfully gathered 2,762 Smurfs in 2019. However, on this occasion, Landerneau broke through barriers with an impressive turnout of 3,076 participants donning iconic blue attire, complete with painted faces and white hats, as they sang an array of cheerful “Smurfy songs.”
The Smurfs, originally created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo in 1958, have evolved into a globally cherished franchise that includes films, television series, video games, and an expansive range of merchandise. These charming characters, known as “Schtroumpfs” in French, are celebrated for their whimsical personas and vibrant adventures in a mythical forest setting, captivating audiences of all ages.
Among the participants was 82-year-old Simone Pronost, who, dressed as a Smurfette, joyfully shared, “A friend encouraged me to join, and I thought: ‘Why not?’” The enthusiasm was palpable, with young student Albane Delariviere traveling over 200 kilometers from Rennes to partake in the unique celebration. “We thought it was a cool idea to help Landerneau out,” she remarked, highlighting the event’s appeal as a way to connect with and support the local community.
Landerneau’s mayor, Patrick Leclerc, who also embraced the Smurf spirit by dressing in full character attire, noted that such gatherings foster a sense of community and provide an enjoyable escape from the complexities of contemporary life. Pascal Soun, head of the organizing association, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the event offered participants a chance to revel in an imaginary world for a few uplifting hours.
Fortunately, participants enjoyed favorable weather conditions this year, a welcome change from the heavy rain that marred the previous year’s attempts. The success of this record-setting event not only underscores the town’s strong communal ties but also highlights the universal appeal of joy and togetherness in vibrant, imaginative celebrations.
