FringeArts presents cabaret performances featuring glitter at the Wanamaker Building.
The Philadelphia Fringe Festival is set to make waves this year, as FringeArts announced the inclusion of a new venue and an exciting series of performances aimed at rejuvenating the local arts scene. In collaboration with the Bearded Ladies Cabaret and Opera Philadelphia’s innovative “Pipe Up!” series, FringeArts will transform the historic Wanamaker Building into a vibrant space for artistic expression from September 13 to 28.
This initiative underscores a significant partnership designed to bring a unique blend of art, music, and entertainment to the heart of Philadelphia. The newly named series, “The Layaway,” promises audiences an immersive experience where creativity and community converge, reminiscent of the joy and merriment often associated with the former Macy’s location. The performances will be staged at Greek Hall, located on the third floor, which will adopt a speakeasy-style decor, creating an intimate setting that encourages audience engagement.
FringeArts CEO and producing director articulated enthusiasm for the collaborative effort facilitated by Opera Philadelphia. The logistical challenges presented by launching such a unique venue were met with eagerness, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the arts in iconic Philadelphia spaces. This partnership reflects a broader trend in which the value of arts and culture is increasingly recognized as pivotal to the city’s vibrant future.
The curated performances will unfold over three weekends, incorporating a diverse schedule that includes storytelling, acoustic performances, and showcases featuring the renowned Wanamaker organ. The Saturday showtimes are set for 9 p.m., with family-friendly programming offered on Sundays at 3 p.m. Ticketing options are flexible, with pay-as-you-can general admission for Saturday evenings and special provisions for families on Sundays.
A rotating lineup of cabaret hosts will feature throughout “The Layaway,” further enriching the audience’s experience. On the final weekend, Fringe attendees will have the opportunity to see John Jarboe, the artistic director of the Bearded Ladies, take to the stage for a memorable performance.
This year’s Fringe Festival marks a historic milestone, being the largest in its 30-year history. Highlights of the festival include interactive projects and groundbreaking artistic works, such as the live video game “asses.masses” and Nora Chipaumire’s culturally rich performance “Dambudzo.”
As Philadelphia continues to redefine its artistic landscape, events like “The Layaway” emphasize the importance of engaging with historical venues and enhancing the community’s cultural fabric.
