Georgia’s Prime Minister Reports Assault on Presidential Palace Intended to Unseat Government

In recent developments in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has characterized the protests that erupted over the weekend as an attempt to destabilize the government. The demonstrations coincided with local elections, where the ruling Georgian Dream party secured a significant majority, claiming around 80 percent of the votes. Former football star Kakha Kaladze successfully retained his position as mayor of Tbilisi.

Kobakhidze addressed the protests, alleging that demonstrators aimed to “overthrow the constitutional order,” and emphasized that EU Ambassador Pawel Herczynski bore “special responsibility” for what he referred to as outside meddling in Georgian politics. He called on the ambassador to disavow the actions occurring in the streets of Tbilisi, noting that nearly 7,000 individuals participated in the protests.

During the demonstrations, which took a turn for the tumultuous, riot police employed pepper spray and water cannons to disperse the crowds. Reports indicate that confrontations between security forces and protesters resulted in injuries on both sides, with the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs confirming that 21 security personnel and six protesters sustained injuries.

Opposition groups, which boycotted the elections, rallied in central Tbilisi, calling for a “peaceful revolution” against the ruling party. Many protesters carried flags representing both Georgia and the European Union in a show of solidarity, emphasizing their desire for alignment with European values and norms. While some protesters engaged in disruptive behavior, the majority aimed to express their dissent peacefully.

Kobakhidze has consistently reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to European integration, stating that the country’s aspirations to join the EU are “steady and irreversible.” This perspective aligns with the nation’s broader geopolitical interests, particularly in an increasingly complex regional landscape.
