Gladwyne Market, a cornerstone of the Lower Merion community, is set to close its doors following a change in ownership. The grocery store, located at 359 Righters Mill Road, has been a local institution for numerous years, providing residents with essential groceries and a sense of community. Recent property transactions indicate that RMR Property Holdings acquired the building for million in April, subsequently purchasing an adjacent parcel at 358 Righters Mill Road for .25 million in June.

The decision to terminate operations comes from the new owners, who intend to repurpose the space. Owner Pete Liccio articulated that the management attempted to negotiate for the market’s continuance but ultimately was informed of the necessity to vacate the premises. The changing dynamics of the property have stirred emotions among long-time patrons who valued the market as more than just a shopping venue.

Andre Golsorkhi, founder and CEO of Haldon House—the developer tied to RMR Property Holdings—has assured the community that there are no intentions to introduce residential spaces or chain stores in the area. Instead, the plan is to create a “bespoke community hub” that complements the historical architecture of Gladwyne. This approach has been communicated to the community with hope for positive integration into the village’s fabric.

While Golsorkhi has not clarified the exact relationship between Haldon House and RMR Property Holdings, he indicated that engagement with existing tenants would be prioritized to ensure their continued involvement in the area. The company aims to respect the historical essence of the buildings while adapting them to modern uses.

Michael Daly, president of the Gladwyne Civic Association, revealed that discussions with the new owners had been proactive, expressing optimism about preserving the character of historic structures. However, residents remain cautious, eager for specific plans and assurances about the future.

In a move to mitigate the impact on employees, Liccio announced that all staff members from Gladwyne Market will transition to the Market of Lafayette Hill, another establishment owned by the Liccio family. This decision underscores the owner’s concern for his employees, many of whom will continue their roles in the family-operated businesses in the region.

The closing of Gladwyne Market marks the end of an era for a beloved community hub that has been around for more than a century, evolving from a general store in the early 1900s to the cherished grocery space known today.
