Lin-Manuel Miranda’s acclaimed musical Hamilton, alongside author Ron Chernow, will receive the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal this fall. This prestigious award, which will take place in Philadelphia, commemorates those who demonstrate courage and conviction in securing liberty for people worldwide. Established in 1988 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution, the Liberty Medal recognizes significant contributions to the principles of freedom and justice.
Notable past recipients of the Liberty Medal include South African leader Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, reflecting the award’s commitment to honoring individuals and organizations that champion civic education and engagement. Chernow and Hamilton have been honored for their substantial contributions to inspiring public interest in the U.S. Constitution, as well as fostering a greater understanding of the nation’s founding principles.
Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton inspired Miranda, who aimed to tell the complex story of the architect of American democracy through the innovative lens of modern music genres, including rap and R&B. Since its premiere a decade ago, Hamilton has revolutionized the Broadway scene, garnering multiple prestigious awards, including 11 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Despite its unprecedented success, the musical has not been without contention. Critics have raised concerns about historical inaccuracies and the portrayal of slavery in the founding era, prompting Miranda to acknowledge in a 2020 statement that he could not fully encapsulate the historical complexities and moral failings of the founding figures.
The Liberty Medal ceremony is scheduled for October 17, 2023, and the event will take place with a view of Independence Mall, a site resonant with the history of American independence. The medal comes with a monetary award of 0,000, of which half will be dedicated to Gilder Lehrman’s Hamilton Education Program. This initiative seeks to engage students with history, civics, and the arts through the lens of the musical.
Historic in nature, this marks the first time that the Liberty Medal has been presented to a work of art. In the past, the award has also been given to organizations such as CNN International and Médecins Sans Frontières, emphasizing the diverse ways in which individuals and collectives contribute to the ongoing quest for liberty.
