Health Information Program ‘Molly’ Launches for East County Residents
The inaugural Mobile Health Library service commenced operations on Monday, aimed at enhancing access to wellness information and resources for residents in East County. This initiative, recognized as the first mobile health library in the region, will facilitate the distribution of vital health materials and three blood-pressure monitors.
The Mobile Outreach Library, affectionately referred to as “Molly,” embarked on its maiden journey to the El Cajon Library, with subsequent visits planned to various community locations, including a stop at the Spring Valley Library later in the week. Holland Kessinger, head librarian at the Health and Wellness Library in La Mesa, expressed excitement regarding the potential outreach of the mobile service. The library is exploring routes that will allow access to senior care facilities, community centers, and nearly any location where the public gathers. Kessinger noted that an interest list of about 10 to 12 organizations has already been established, indicating a strong community demand for health resources.
Covering a diverse 750-square-mile region, the Grossmont Healthcare District, home to approximately 520,000 residents, spans several areas, including Alpine, El Cajon, La Mesa, and Spring Valley. This expansive service area underscores the importance of enhancing health literacy and access to resources among communities that may face challenges in reaching traditional library facilities.
Established in 2002 by the Grossmont Healthcare District, the Health and Wellness Library has served as a crucial resource for residents. Library cards are available to individuals who live, work, or attend school within the district’s boundaries, promoting inclusivity and access to information.
The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Board of Directors officially approved the mobile library initiative in December 2023, with the purchase of the van occurring the previous year. The operating budget for Molly is set at ,000 for the current year, with expectations of gradual reductions in costs over time.
During the launch event held at the Health and Wellness Library, Amy Abrams, Chief Community Health Officer of the Grossmont Healthcare District, articulated the importance of this service in advancing health equity. The mobile library aims to serve working individuals, those with limited mobility, and residents from rural and tribal communities, thereby removing barriers to information access.
Visitors to the Mobile Health Library will have the opportunity to register for library cards, participate in digital literacy training, and seek assistance in health-related research. Additionally, Molly will provide comprehensive information regarding services available through various non-profit health and community organizations operating in East County. This innovative approach represents a significant step toward improving public health resources and promoting wellness in the community.
