Heat dome expected to raise temperatures to 100 degrees or higher across the Midwest and Eastern U.S.

A significant and potentially hazardous heat wave is anticipated to envelop central and eastern regions of the United States this week, with forecasts indicating that temperatures could escalate to unprecedented levels, particularly as the nation approaches the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Meteorological experts caution that cities ranging from the Midwest to the East Coast may record temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s Fahrenheit.

According to meteorologists at the Weather Prediction Center, conditions are likely to be particularly extreme in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with certain areas poised to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The capital, Washington, D.C., is projected to surpass this threshold on one or more days, while major cities such as Philadelphia and New York City are also forecasted to experience temperatures crossing the century mark.

Daily temperature records may be threatened in these metropolitan areas by Thursday and Friday of this week. For reference, Philadelphia is on track to potentially tie its all-time record high of 104 degrees for the month of June, a figure that underscores the severity of the impending heat wave.

The onset of this extreme heat is set to begin as early as Sunday, affecting regions of the Plains, where temperatures are expected to surge into the 90s. As the week progresses, the heat will expand into the Great Lakes region, impacting cities like Chicago. By midweek, much of the East Coast will be grappling with the oppressive warmth.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings that high humidity levels will exacerbate the heat, creating conditions that may feel even more unbearable. Heat index values, which consider humidity alongside actual air temperature, could soar to 110 degrees, with localized readings possibly reaching as high as 115 degrees. The unusual heat will likely persist overnight, with nighttime temperatures remaining elevated—many urban areas may see lows staying in the 70s, and in some cases, not dipping below 80 degrees.

The prolonged nature of this heat is attributed to a vast, persistent high-pressure system commonly referred to as a heat dome. This phenomenon is expected to remain in place throughout the Fourth of July weekend. However, as the holiday comes to a close, meteorological projections suggest that this dome may shift westward, leading to cooler conditions in the East and potentially bringing thunderstorms in its wake.

Residents in affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions against the extreme heat, particularly when participating in outdoor activities during the holiday weekend.
